AdBlue faults often come to light on a cold morning. The AdBlue tank heater is a frequent complaint on Mercedes-Benz diesel cars and vans, and drivers notice an AdBlue warning before the first trip. This guide explains what a Mercedes AdBlue heater failure means, which part is involved, and how owners can respond.
Selective catalytic reduction uses diesel exhaust fluid to reduce nitrogen oxides in the exhaust. DEF is a urea and water solution that freezes in cold weather. Dosing can stop below the fluid’s freezing point; the tank heater warms it above that point so it can flow properly. The dosing injector sprays only when the fluid is liquid in the tank.
The AdBlue tank unit carries the AdBlue heater element, the AdBlue pump, the tank sensor and temperature sensors. The heater is resistive, and the control unit checks the heater circuit for an open connection or abnormal current draw. It checks each tank sensor and temperature sensor circuit for an implausible reading. A recurring fault on cold starts warrants a hardware check.
Reported Mercedes AdBlue heater fault codes follow a familiar pattern:
A low urea message after a top up may point to the AdBlue tank level sensor rather than the heater, so treat the level sensor fault and heater fault separately. Freezing conditions require heating, making an AdBlue heater malfunction easier to notice in winter.
A Mercedes heater fault or AdBlue heater issue does not always mean the element failed. Likely causes include a broken AdBlue heater circuit or tank sensor circuit, a loose connector, moisture in the wiring, and a faulty temperature sensor. Electrical failures can affect a connector or heater supply line. A fault may appear only while the heater runs, and an AdBlue fault on every cold start points to a hardware fault, not a glitch.
Diagnostics should confirm the state of the AdBlue heater and tank sensor circuits before anyone buys parts. A workshop measures the AdBlue heater element resistance, checks AdBlue sensor voltage and inspects the connector pins for corrosion. If the harness is damaged, an open circuit fault might be repaired without a new AdBlue tank.
| Part | Symptom | Check |
|---|---|---|
| AdBlue tank level sensor | low urea warning | sensor voltage and tank connector |
| AdBlue tank temperature sensor | cold-start AdBlue fault | sensor reading and wiring |
| AdBlue pump or injector | dosing fault | pump pressure and injector test |
Treat each AdBlue fault separately. A tank sensor issue, a temperature sensor issue and a pump issue can share one AdBlue warning. Check the AdBlue sensor circuit and the tank connector; an AdBlue stored fault code does not prove the pump or injector failed.
A warning or visual check alone does not establish which AdBlue sensor or tank failed, or which fault is stored; readings matter more than the message text.
Cold weather is hard on an AdBlue tank heater. A failing AdBlue heater can show a fault when heating is needed. Contaminated fluid with excess water content can cause a separate dosing fault, but it does not prove the heater failed. A fluid change will not repair an open heater element.
The repair depends on the tests. If the AdBlue heater element is open, replace the heater or AdBlue tank unit. If the fault sits in wiring or a connector, a harness repair may clear the fault. For a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter exposed to road salt, inspect and clean the AdBlue tank sensor connector pins during maintenance before ordering parts.
The AdBlue pump and AdBlue heater can share one tank unit, while the dosing injector sits downstream, but these are separate failure points. A weak pump or tank sensor fault is its own issue, and a blocked injector produces a different fault pattern. A fault code can narrow testing to a component or circuit, including the heater element, the AdBlue pump and the level sensor; mixed SCR errors do not prove one cause.
OBDtune offers a hand-held AdBlue tool for Mercedes-Benz diesel vehicles. Connect it to the OBD port, choose a supported AdBlue script on the media screen, wait for the process to finish and unplug the tool. Vehicles without that screen select the same options from a microSD card. The tool does not read AdBlue sensor data or fault codes; it applies the script you select.
Supported scripts include:
The change can be reversed: the software returns to factory state for AdBlue sensor diagnostics and repairs. OBDtune supports Mercedes-Benz diesel models only; other brands are not covered. Confirm the year, model and engine before ordering; the option list does not confirm compatibility for every combination.
Suppressing an AdBlue fault does not repair a failed AdBlue heater, pump, tank sensor or injector, and it does not make driving safe. If the heater element is damaged, replacement is still the only hardware fix. Mercedes AdBlue problems can be managed, but the driver remains responsible for a roadworthy vehicle and must check local emissions software rules before use.
SCR total delete – no longer necessary to repair the SCR system and refill the AdBlue fluid
Removes Check Engine error
Removes 0 Remaining Starts error
Removes Starts idle error
Removes Check AdBlue error
Ability to roll back to factory settings

Easy pass emissions test ability
We suggest deleting all of the following components together (SCR, EGR, Flaps and DPF) as all of these elements work together as one system
Disables SCR (DEF) system on equipped vehicles
Disables Swirl Flaps in the intake manifold
Optionally disables Diesel Particulate Filter
Disables EGR valve
Ability to roll back to factory settings
