What the NOx sensor does
The OM642 engine uses NOx sensors to monitor nitrogen oxide levels in the exhaust. A nitrogen oxide sensor sends data to the engine control unit, which compares readings with expected operating conditions. If the signal moves out of range, the car can display a warning, store a fault, or limit normal engine control.
A nitrogen oxide NOx sensor may fail because of age, heat exposure, wiring damage, contamination, or an internal electronic fault. The same code can also remain after a sensor replacement if stored control data has not been cleared correctly.
Common OM642 NOx sensor issues
On a supported Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with the OM642 diesel, the customer may notice a warning that comes back after service or after fitting a new part. A Mercedes-Benz NOx sensor fault does not always mean another sensor is immediately needed.
- The NOx code returns after a replacement sensor was installed.
